Opel Manta returning as an electric vehicle

Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD

Big in Europe and the US in the 1970s, the Opel Manta is making a comeback as an EV. Meet the Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD.

Opel has referenced the “growing phenomenon of ‘restomods’” as the reason it’s bringing back the Manta. Meet the Manta GSe ElektroMOD which Opel reckons is all about combining new with old.

Details are still very, very thin but the brand has said, “The all-electric Manta GSe ElektroMOD with its fully digital cockpit is as sporty as an original Opel GSe and displays its further ambitions in the “MOD” part of its name – for modern technology and sustainable lifestyle and the English abbreviation of ‘modification’”.

With plenty of countries suggesting a ban on internal combustion engines very soon, Opel reckons its electric Manta means buyers will be able to enjoy classic motoring via a thoroughly modern package. And without the risk of “potential driving bans for older combustion engine cars”.

But that’s it. No word on whether it’ll be a show car only, or a limited run thing or whether it’ll be sold outside of Europe. Or when. But with Opel announcing that all of its vehicles will be electrified by 2024, we can only hope we see a lot more of these restomod-esque EVs from car makers.
